What is a DJ Mixer?
A DJ mixer is an audio mixing console/soundboard or an electronic device, which is used by DJs for combining/mixing, routing or changing the dynamics and level of audio signals. DJ mixers should not be confused with any audio mixers, as they feature a crossfader to allow for easy transitioning between any two sources; in addition to their cueing ability, or, in other words, ability to redirect any non-playing source to the headphones.
For mixing or connecting the audio sources, the mixers can have anywhere between 2 to six channels. The Gemini PS-04 DJ mixer, for example, comes with 5 channels. Each channel is equipped with a phono input for the turntables and a maximum of two line level inputs for the audio sources, such as a CD player, etc. It also features an equalizer, crossfader, one to two microphone inputs, a headphone volume control, headphone jack plugs and two or more outputs. There can be either one volume control for all the outputs, or each output can have a separate volume control depending on the type or version of the DJ mixer.
The basic function of a DJ mixer is to facilitate the seamless blending of two songs together, resulting in a track with perfect rhythm and music - sweeping like a continuous wave across the floor of your club. A DJ mixer is a central unit of the entire system where the songs get blended together into tracks. DJ mixers can also be used to create DJ mixsets or DJ mixes.
