Is the good old CD on its way out? In the days of MP3 players and music on mobile phones, the silver discs can sometimes seem impractical and it was only a matter of time until a successor came on to the scene. The music industry is now looking for an alternative storage media to the CD, and has decided on the MicroSD memory card, according to the Golem.de website. According to this site, Universal, Sony, EMI and Warner Bothers have together decided to build up the MicroSD card together with the memory specialist SanDisk. Baby will be DRM free and will go under the name of SlotMusic.

The music companies will bring this new format out in the US in October, and sometime before Christmas in Europe. It’s questionable whether the SD card will be able to do everything better than the CD. Young people get most of their music from the internet nowadays. Downloading, sharing and exchanging music illegally have become a huge problem for the music industry, as they are eating into profits and threatening the very existence of some companies. The biggest problem however may be for the older users. The cards in themselves are very small and can be fiddly – users will need a good eye to be able to handle them.
