Apple gives away iPods to Students
Students, who purchase an Apple computer and an iPod or iPod touch at the same time between July and the middle of September, can be completely reimbursed for the price of the music players, as Apple announced. 199 dollars are reimbursed with an iPod nano and 299 dollars with an iPod touch. This corresponds to the US price for the 8 gigabyte version of the device.
Apple could achieve multiple goals with the promotion. The California based company’s devices are already beloved by US students, and the so-called “Back to school” quarter is traditionally strong with student purchases. With the iPod accompaniment for the summer, Apple could try to accelerate their gains in market share for the computer market.
However, the campaign will likely be even more important for the iPod business. Sales of the popular music player only grew by one percent in the January to March quarter. Moreover, Apple also wants to establish the iPod touch, next to the iPhone, as a mobile online platform, on which more revenue can be earned later by selling software or advertising. But to make this really happen it is important for Apple to bring more devices onto the market.
